Yam 150 Replace Transom Swivel Bracket

Howdy all!
I could use some advice on replacing a broken swivel bracket on a 2002 150 TLRA. My problem is removing the shifting rod. Do I have to remove the power head or can I drop the mid section? Is there any "tricks" for removing the bracket from the mid section?

If replacing upper shift shaft you will have to remove powerhead in order to replace shift shaft
