115hp 1995 yamaha

i am having trouble getting my outboard to go into reverse. it goes into forward just fine but just grinds in reverse. any solutions?

unhook cable at motor, run on hoseand engage linkage by hand...if it DOES go into rev, then cable just needs adjusting...if NOT then gears need work.
