Lower unit 1995 70Hp

Hello all, i am wanting to drop the lower unit off my 1995 70hp yammy to replace the impeller, I have tried to see where I seperate my gear shift shaft but cant see any nuts around the exposed mid section to seperate it, I think someone told me you have to release it at the top is this correct? I can see where it comes through into the power head but it is very difficult to get to and there is a split pin through the top of it which looks a nightmare to remove, can anyone help me with some advice? thanks in advance

The shift shaft has a splined coupling. It will seperator when you drop lower unit without removing anything on shift linkage.
