  • HPDI 150 Powerloss issue - Out of Ideas

    Ok folks-

Looking for some good ideas to solve my powerloss issue.

    TYPE- 2001 HPDI 150

    SYMPTOM:
I have a brief powerloss at engine speed over 3500rpm. Just enough to lurch you forward. RPM drop for a split seccond then kick back up. I can make this happen if i aggressivly power-up or if i am running over 3500rpm and get into some wake or chop and the boat starts to bounce arround. Here is the tricky part... If i slowly power-up on flat water i get on plane and i can max throttle without a problem and run fine, but If I start to bounce it get the powerloss.

    THINGS CHECKED:

    fuel is clear

Water separator filter clear (replaced anyway)

    Fule line checked for kink

    Fuel pump is good

    VST drained - (clear)

    In-line fuel filter changed

    VST filter changed

VST pump is good @ 50psi (tested while symptoms were happening)

Batt terms are clean and tight

Ignition seems tight (yanked on harness to see if anything loose not a problem)

Visual check for loose ground (looked good. verry little corrosion cleaned what was found).

I am fresh out of ideas with the exception of replacing the fuel pressure sensor on the VST.

    I am open to suggestions....

    Thanks in advance!

    pumps

    main pump is fine

    med pressure pump is 50lbs

that leaves high pressure mechanical feeding the rails. the mechanical nature of that pump makes me doubt its the issue unless the belt is slipping. its cog driven so should be pretty obvious. I'll check when the rain stops!!! ha

It idles ok does not shut off.

Opps I thought he was asking if it failed at the idle.

            hpdi 150 fuel pump issues

I have twin 03 150 hpdis. I have some similar issues. Had a mechanic test with computer will running in the water. Mid pump tested fine at 50psi. The computer indicated the top pump had low psi and would blink/highlight on the engine test page while running. I also changed water separator filter and the fuel filter on the exterior engine (I assume this is the vst filter?). He was pretty sure this pump was the problem but would get 2nd opinion. Is there anything else to check as far as filters. Ive heard there is another filter or screen that could clog. Does anyone know of another filter?

Probably need to run on diagostic computer and check high pressure fuel pump and other sensors.

Need to clean filter number 28 and replace number 20 in diagram http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ya...201/parts.html
Then retest to see if fuel pressure comes back up.

                    Running like a top

Sorry not to have posted but i have been busy fishing... Take that as the engine is fixed!!!.

                    Replaced the VST filter AGAIN!

For those uninitiated. This filter is located on the bottom of the med-pressure fuel pump inside the VST tank on the HPDI.

Access is a pain in the @ss and better to take the whole tank off and do it on the bench. Just be careful of the throttle position sensor located to the upper left of the tank.

Strange that the filter went so fast but apparently after checking with another master tech he has seen them go this quick.

Make sure you replace the gasket on the VST tank when you do the filter.

Best part is that the filter is only $30.00

Been there.......filters are about $63.00 (I cleaned mine) and the tank o-ring is about $30.00

Mine clogged after switching to ethanol which likely cleaned my alum tank.

It is my understanding the VST filter is 2 micron.

                            VST Filter Clogs

I've got the same problem on both '01 150 HPDIs - VST filters clog. It's a pursuit with alum tank, 10-mic raycor separators which look fine but they have a much larger surface area and never have a problem with the first inline filter in the engine. The guys a the shop looked at one filter under a microscope and told me it looked like "flat blades of grass". It's not grass, just looks that way under a microscope.

I was wondering the samething...is there a 2 mic filter that can be put inline (inline, water separator, etc)?

Sounds like a fuel polish maybe in order too.

Ok so it took a while for me to clean the filter because of stripped screws. Then getting a replacement for the screw but the vst filter is now clean. I got it out on the water a couple of days ago and she ran great, but it sounds like the problem is starting to happen again. I was running about 4000 rpms and you can feal a slight bump or hesitation. It is not near as bad as it was. I don't know if some more stuff is in the vst filter again or if its something else.

Should I run it for a little while then try cleaning the vst filter again or change that next inline filter that is after the pump?

                              Thanks for all the help
