2001 yamaha 225 ss uses too much fuel

we ran for about 7 hours at mostly idle and used 54 gallons of fuel (measured at fill-up) this is the first time we have taken the boat out, a parker 23 center console , and the fuel consumption seems way too much. we replaced the fuel filter before going out. any ideas on how much fuel it is common to use per engine hour? what will give us better fuel economy? any help would be appreciated!

Should be running 1.4GPH at low speed, from the bulletin.

Did you notice fuel in the water from exhaust?One of the fuel pumps can get a hole in the diaphragm and poor fuel straight thru.Primer bulb will not get firm when squeezed.Oxygen sensor ,if this one has one will also cause it to poor out too much fuel at idle,by being carboned up.This determines injector pulse length.Just spent $1000 to learn this lesson on a 2000 250 hp ox66
