Replacing gears in lower unit

To repair my reverse my yamaha certified mechanic says to replace the whole gear set at the same time...reverse and forward gear so they wear together. i know with a lot of things with gears thats important....but the forward and reverse gear dont even mesh with each other...right? they mesh with the drive gear and clutch. so will i be alright just replacing reverse gear?

Normally the forward has the most wear on clutch dogs and needs to replaced as well but yes we replace gears as a set. It's your choice if just want to replace reverse gear.
