Yamaha 9.9 Stator failures

I have a 2000 T9.9 that has burned out 3 stators to date. I even replaced the CDI unit the last time and the stator still burned out after 60 hours. Someone suggested that the problem may be associated with the charging of the starter battery??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the voltage regulator, if the diodes in reg is bad battery voltage can get back to stator and burn out stator.
