Gear Shift Problem?

1997 40hp Yamaha outboard - Shifts in and out of gear. Runs fine at slow speeds. When I reach about 1800 RPM, the boat loses all forward speed (as if the prop quits spinning) and the RPMs start to increase on their own.

Is this a gear problem, or a cable adjustment problem? Is there anything I can try? Thanks.

Sounds like you have a hub slipping on prop and need to be rehubbed.
