Impeller replacement

Hi there I have a 40VMHD and I was wondering if anyone can tell me do I have to undo the shift lever at the powerhead end or is it splined into the top of the gearbox, so I can remove the lower unit to replace the impeller. Thanking You very much Yamaha 40VMHD 2004

Not familiar with that model but it may have a nut on shift shaft just above lower unit that has to be unthreaded.
