Hi. The Upper casing (above the oil fill plug) has rusted out above the 1/2" round opening. I have removed the casing and was wondering if I could weld the whole thing closed? Does that hole and tube do anything beside drain water from the oil pan plate? Any help would be appreciated.

It's hard to say without looking at it. You might take it to your yamaha dealer and let them look at to see if it can be welded.
