  • 200 HPDI Stalling

I have a 2001 200hp HPDI. Recently I am experiencing intermittent stalling. The motor has refused to start after idling or running at low rpms, as well as cutting out while running at 4000 rpms. When I attempt to restart the motor I get an alarm and it will not turn over. If I let it sit a while it will start. I changed the plugs and the water fuel separator and ran it one day with out a problem, but the next day it stalled again. I checked the new plugs and they already seemed dirty. I am now going to change the element in the fuel filter. Is there any thing else I can try?

If you really want to diagnose it right you need a Yamaha YDS kit. That's the software and adapter kit that allows you to plug into the motor's computer and see whats ailing it. It sounds like the O2 sensor is crapped up and causing the motor to run rich and fouling the plugs. You can pull the O2 sensor out and clean it with heat from a propane torch and brush the carbon off to get it to read right again. Or just install a new one but they're a bit pricey ( 68F-8592A-00-00 = $230 ). Most people just clean the old one. If you don't have one already go to www.YamahaPubs.com and order a factory shop manual for your motor, or if you prefer you can post your email and I can send you the .pdf version to read on your computer. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I will try cleaning the sensor. I did order the manuals. As far as the YDS Kit, do you know if it can be purchased by the public or only by authorized Yamaha dealers?
      Thanks Again!

Yes the public can buy the Yamaha YDS, the part number is 60V-85300-02 and it costs about $250 from www.Boats.net (Central Florida Yamaha), or just follow the links on this page and give them a call. I don't think their online parts ordering system works for the YDS because it's rare that the public even knows it exists, much less wants to buy it. You need a laptop or you can use a desktop if you can get it close enough to the engine. It comes with a cable that's about 10' long that plugs into the ECU lead on the starboard side of the motor (hidden near all the other harness plugs...). Just call their parts department and ask if they have it in stock, sometimes its backordered. If you were in south Florida I'd let you use mine.

Solange the O2 sensor is located on the upper outboard side of the starboard cylinder bank.

Here is the part number for the oxygen sensor.

Also, Yamaha has stopped selling the old Yamaha YDIS system. They are now selling a new YDIS 2.0. It is more expensive, but I think it has some more items for new motors and new electric controls.
