  • broken bolt

I am in a bad spot.
I have broken a bolt off the thermostat housing on a 70 hp Yamaha, and then the easy out also broke off in it??? How can I drill out the hole?? Will a titaniam bit work??

I don't think you'll ever drill through an easy out. Your best bet is to drill down the side with the smallest bit you can find. You will then either have to install a helicoil, or tap it out to the next size. Buy several smal bits of the same size because the tips break easily. You will also need a small punch or chisel to get the easy out loose once you drill next to it. Its not the end of the world, you just have to have the right tools to get it out.

        hello
try with a "cobalt" drill bit, they work pretty good on stainless, but they break easily.

          Got it

Well to make a long story short, I was in home depot and saw a bit for the roto-tool that is made to cut stainless steel, so I bought it and used it like a drill bit. It started fine when it hit the easy out it slowed but it poped it out. I kept going and finally got all the way through the bolt. I kept increasing drill bit sizes till all the old bolt was out then tapped out the hole. Bottom line I got it.

Great news. I love it when a plan comes together!

Always best to remain cool and spend a moment to think it through, rather than drilling with anything that comes to hand (e.g. what-ever is in your tool-box!)
