No the powerhead will need to be removed to get shift shaft out.

I just had to do it in mine (225, 1991 txrp) and it cost me $ 2,400 including replacing a bracket where one out of 6 bolts was frozen and did not come out even with heat.
I'll be curious to see how much will it cost you to do the repairs; I'm happy with my service delaer mechs but still think it was a little pricey!
I'm in the North East area

I read some where ,where a guy cut the old shaft at the top and removed it from the bottom,, then they marked the position of the shift linkage of the new shaft ,,then ground the top of the shaft and removed the linkage, reinstalled the new shaft from the bottom and then at the top had the linkage spot welded back in position where he marked it I have a 1989 200hp and the shaft is not to bad yet but when it goes i wil try this first ,, if you come up with another way please let us knowLast edited by poengine33; 11-13-2009, 09:13 PM.
