I'm new to boat ownership and have to rely on others to do maintenance but i want to do what i can to try to keep my motor running good without paying dealer labor rates of $100 per hour and wihout voiding the warranty. I just had a 50 hour service done for $586 (new plugs, oil change, fuel filter, anode, lower unit, pulled and greased prop shaft).

Can I save $'s if I buy the parts myself and have a local guy in my neighborhood who advertises outboard services do these sort of things (he's recommended byothers)? I don't think this will void the warranty. Where, besides the dealer, is the best place to buy a water pump, fuel filter, oil filter, anode, spark plugs?

My battery on my 2007 18' seahunt d/c is under the rear passenger seat in a compartment and its very hard to get to - is there a way to extend the cables from the motor to be able to pull or slide the battery out to check the water level? it would make replacing it easier too.

Also, after running in saltwater and with my boat in the boathouse sling, i can't reach the lower unit to flush it with earmuffs. i can't put a board from the dock to the boathouse to reach it either. I'm told by the local dealer to use the upper hose attachment on the motor to flush....he says that's why its there; but the manual says don't run the motor. If thats all i have to do, will it flush fresh water through the water pump and if not, then what can I do to flush the water pump?

Any and all comments will be most appreciated. Bless you all.

I don't why the warranty should be void, as long as your mechanic follows the service schedule, and you maintain a receipt log of everything fitted. If you could undertake some DIY training yourself such as a night-class then you could save $$$s. Only use Yamaha parts. Anything other - and you'll risk the warranty. Plenty places to buy online.

Regards the battery - longer connecting cables are the only answer. Splicing in an extension is to be avoided. You need to take into account the distance between the engine and battery, as the cable gauge wil need to increase - the further apart you go.

Use marine-grade cable, available by the foot, and cut to size. http://www.alternatorparts.com/wire_size_chart.htm
