  • Outboard Identification HELP!!!

I just bought a small fishing boat and it came with a yamaha motor. I can't seem to find anything about this motor the numbers on the side do not match up with any number from yamaha or third party parts supplier.

Here is what is stamped on the placard on the motor mount,

    first line
    85AEM

    next line
    688 -- LL -- 650783

4 years ago I found some kind of schematic on a swedish website to identify my second hand Yamaha.

The 650783 is the serial number for the engine.

The "688" comes out in the table as a 85AE, an 85hp engine which started in 1978. The "A" (your engine is a "85A") means it is revision/generation A of the engine, i.e. one of the very first engines built of that series. So from this, you should assume that it is a -78 or -79 model or something like that.

However, I see a "D" stamped in the lower right corner of the ID tag. Is it really a D, or something else? Is there a letter in the lower left of that tag? According to my table that is another way of determining the year, but it conflicts with the "generation A" theory, because a "year D" indicates year 1990.
An explanation to this discrepancy could be that the 85A was so good that they never changed the revision letter, essentially making the same engine for 12 years.

No letter in front of the number means it is a 2-stroke engine (but I guess you have already discovered that).

The E stands for electric start.

The next letter should say something about the trim/tilt, but M is not among those letters. In fact, there is no M whatsoever in that table, so it is just my guess that it was used for "M"anual tilt at the time.

No O means no oil injection, which means you have to mix the 2-stroke oil into the petrol tank manually.

The L says long transom height.

I see no explanation for a second L. There is another L used, but in the beginning of the name, that is for Left rotating propeller (used in twin engine systems).

I can of course not guarentee the accuracy of this information, but I hope that was of any help.
