I bought an older boston whaler with a 1990 90hp yamaha 2 stroke on it that was reported to be in good condition. I picked up the boat and motor with a new trailer real cheap so I kinda knew what I was in for. I took the boat out for a test run after 2 days of cleaning it and found a strange vibration and the motor won't idle for long. I figure it just needs a tune-up. After it was out of the water I spun the prop by hand and the lower unit drive shaft sems to be bent. Looking at the price of rebuilt lower units I was kinda surpirzed to see them over $800. I was wondering how difficult it is to replace the shaft myself, are there specilaty tools that are needed that wound make this impossable? I am mechanicly incline, but have never worked on outboards before other than water pumps. Any help would be great.
