Disconnecting shift rod on small Yamaha?

I volunteered to change the impeller on a friends 1992 6 hp 2 stroke Yamaha. I've dropped the lower unit about an inch and I'm looking for advice on disconnecting the shift rod. Do I pry up the rubber bellows on the lower end of the rod to get to a connector of some type?
