Shift Rod (upper)

I want to replace my upper shift rod.

After taking off the power head, does the lower
unit have to be dropped too ?

Or, can I simply slide the shift down thru its
housing and engage the lower shift rod shaft from
above ?

I have a 1991 150 TXRP, 2 cycle

pull the head and pull it out.if it was used in salt , prepare to wrestle some of the head bolts....soakem' early !!
