  • rotor and stator contact

one mornimg, without prior notice my 200v6 outboard did not start. even though i took the boat out the day before and had no problems. close observation showed magnet fragments in the area under the rotor. on removing the rotor i noticed that the inside of the rotor seemed to have been rubbing on the stator, eventually cutting some of the thin metal away and the magnets, some how fragmented, was coming out through the holes in the metal in little pieces. the rotor and stator were both tightly mounted in place at removal (as they should be expected to be in normal conditions).
Anyone seen this before or able to explain. this is causing a pretty expensive repair and i would hate to have it happen again, but i cannot figure out the cause.

Check the top main crankshaft bearing to see if there is any loose side to side play.
