1999 115 2stroke speedo

Hi have just got a boat with a 1999 115 2 stroke on it carbed not injected and the speedo does not work. How do these work do they need a part that sticks out the back off the boat and spins to tell how fast you are going? Sometimes there is a slight reading on the speedo of 3-4 mph so that is why am confused any help would be great.

There's a pitot tube opening in the leading edge of the lower unit. Its a small hole and very susceptable to clogging. You can take a tiny drill bit and run it into the hole by hand to clear out whatever debris are stuck up in there. Use caution not to snap the drill bit off in the hole or you will be in for a lot more work. I don't even have mine connected anymore. My digital speedo gauge can take input from the GPS so that's the way I rigged it.
