40 hp yamaha

I replace my water pump on my 40 hp yamaha outboard and when i reinstalled the lower unit it the prop is in drive. The shifter is still in neutral. I moved the shifter in to reverce and it slill was in drive. I don not know what to do next to fix this problem?

drop the lower unit and be sure it still works correctly, f/n/r, spin or try to spin on each.
i always put foot AND throttles in neutral at install.asty, ensure your gear cable is pushing AND pulling.
