• grinding noise

'94 70hp precision blend.

when I put the motor in gear, forward or reverse, I get an unfriendly grinding/clanking type noise for a second or two before the prop fully engages, then it goes away and things seem ok. Any ideas on what this could be? lower unit gear slipping? Prop not installed correctly? When I took the prop off and changed gears, the affect wasnt nearly as pronounced, but still think I heard a similiar affect.

any input appreciated.

thanks!

Jim,
Sounds to me like the shift linkage is slipping at the motor and the lower unit is not completely going into gear.
Take the hood off and have someone shift the remote and observe the shift rod and linkage. Then disconnect the shift linkage and move it by hand. The shift cable should be moving the shift rod as much as you can by hand - if not, then problem with shift cable or connection.
Good luck ,
