  • Oil Pressure Warning Bar Flashing?

I have a 2003 225 4 stroke Yamaha... when fishing last Sunday I got an oil warning???
The boat has two round Yamaha gauges one showed a flashing LED bar with the oil symbol below it. In the manual it says that if you have low oil pressure the bar will flash, the motor will reduce RPM to 2000 and a warning horn would sound... the bar flashed but the engine RPM was not effected and there was no horn blowing... any idea if this is truly an oil issue or just a malfunction within the gauge? I checked the oil level and it was fine. The viscosity of the oil seems good. I will change the oil and filter.
Someone give me your feedback please!

I need help with a similar problem. I have twin 2004 Yamaha F115s. The port engine temperature indicator bar on its multi-function tach started flashing last time out. The motors only have 45 hours and all harnesses, tachs, key switch, etc are brand new. The buzzers sound when the key switches are just turned on, but do not sound when the temp bar flashes. The SLOW system is not activated and the stream of water coming out of the tell-tale is strong and cool. The bar now flashes when the key switch is turned on and the motor has not been run in days. It seems that the problem must either be in: 1) the electronic module (ECM?) that the sender plugs in to, 2) the multifunction tach, 3) the key switch?, or 4) the wiring. Which is most likely and how do I troubleshoot this problem? (PS: I changed the temp sender just to be sure it was not a problem because the resistance reading was a little different from the one on the other motor. Same symptoms.)

Since I didn't get a response on my previous posting regarding my flashing temperature bar, I proceeded to figure it out for myself. Because the bar was flashing even when the engine was not running but the keyswitch was on and because the buzzer never sounded, I suspected that there was a problem with the ECM, tach, key switch, or wiring and that there was not an actual over-temperature condition. In order to determine whether the ECM thought that there was a temperature problem (and for future maintenance) I ordered Yamaha Part # LIT-YDIS1-23-00 ($63.95), which is the Yamaha Diagnostic Software CD, and also Part # 60V-WS850-00-00 ($162.25), which is the cable and converter black box that connects the YDS connector on the engine to a USB port on a laptop computer. I discovered that the ECM did not have any stored codes related to temp, so I was left with a wiring, tach, or keyswitch problem. Guessing that a search for a bad connection would be the best place to start, I unplugged and replugged the cables to the ECM but the bar still flashed. Next, I unplugged and replugged two other connectors, located on the starboard side of the engine and directly aft of the ECM and the problem was solved.

PS: 1) Before I bought the USB cable, I wondered if I could just make something up myself, but the cable assembly I bought (from Boats.net - local dealer price was much higher) has a potted black box that I think is probably required to do some hand-shaking 2) I never take anything I own to someone else for repair, so the investment in the YDS was the right choice for me. I hope this helps. Good luck!

        Catch22
You need to have the oil pressure checked to make sure it's not an oil pressure problem. If the gauge has been working ok until now then the 2stroke/4stroke switch in back of tach is probably set correctly. It could be a disconnected wire going to gauge, a bad oil pressure sensor or low oil pressure.

My experience is the bars operate like this:
--- means you ok on oil
--_ means you are running low, but will not sound
-__ will sound the horn and drop RPM.

            Capt.
is there a reason you posted on a very old thread instead of starting a new one yourself for your problem?

If the light starts blinking when just turn on without engine running then sounds like a problem in tach possible still set for 2 stroke engine.

                Yamaha tach alarm

                2003 Yamaha 200 hp 2 Stroke

We went out Fishing Saturday ...
45 Minute ride to get where we were going

Moved about 3-4 times after that 5 or 10 minute ride Each time.

Started to head BACK about 6 Hours later

                The Alarm started sounding
The TACH started Flashing ( ALL 3 ) Icons

I wonder what the hell is going on.

a couple of weeks when something similar happened
I was not able to get the boat to go more than maybe 3 knots maybe 4
I did not have gauges at that time

Someone a Marine Mech. said It might be me over heating the engine.
he recommended changing the Thermostat. So I did, But then the above happened . . .
