• ox66 oil reservoir problem

hey guys, i was wondering if anyone here can help me. here's my problem:

i have a 2001 yamaha ox66 250. yesterday for some reason the oil low level warning would come one even though the oil tank was full. we finally found out that it was draining oil from the reservoir on the powerhead, but it wasn't pulling oil from the oil tank. it just kept emptying that small reservoir and then the alarm would sound

so it would only run for about 30 mins, then we would have to fill the powerhead oil reservoir again.

i'm guessing the remote oil tank pickup might be clogged? or is there some kind of pump that isnt working that i should check?

thanks

Give this link a look, You have a pump on the back of the oil tank that might be shot.

Joey,
There should be a manual bypass switch on the local tank that allows you to fill the local tank from the remote.
Turn the switch on - if the oil pumps from the remote tank ok, then the control module in the local tank is bad. If the oil does not pump, then get close to the remote tank and listen for the pump running - if it is, then the filter inside is plugged up. If you hear no pump running, then the remote pump/motor is bad, or associated wiring.
Good luck ,

I just posted this. See if it fits your situation:

Plastic reservoir tank has the infeed tube broken off at its' male fitting. 2nd time this has happened. I've had 2 power heads replaced under warranty and suspected oil interuption but was told by mechanic that it wasn't possible. I discovered problem at a ramp on both occasions because a thin film oil slick formed around the lower unit. Trying to get Yamaha's attention to this matter before I lose a 3rd power head. Apparently, either a casting rib on the motor block sticks out too far or there is a flaw in the plastic molds of the oil reservoir. When properly bolted up it stresses the male fitting and work hardens it unil breakage. You can not add spacers to relieve stress since the mounting of the oil reservoir is not flat (2D) but formed around the block (3D) - if you add spacers to a given bolt the next bolt hole locations wil not line up.

Anybody else evere see this one? There is no active Yamaha Service Bulletin.

I've learned a couple things about the oil system: see my posts about my current problem.

If the transfer pump runs and pumps oil with the emergency switch, then the pump is probably OK. There is a small oil filter in the line coming from the sub tank. My sub tank is in the bilge, and the filter is behind the tank so you have to remove it to access it. You could have a clog there. There is a level sensor in the main tank on the engine that has 3 switches in it: high level, low level and alarm level. What's supposed to happen is when the low level switch closes, the con*****er should turn the transfer pump on. Depending on the con*****er you have, the newer ones like I have (2004) run the transfer pump for 90 seconds or until the high level switch closes, whatever comes first. You can check the sensor with an ohm meter. If the low level switch isn't closing, you don't get oil transfer when you need it. Your alarm is coming on when you reach that level so it doesn't sound like the float is sticking. There is also a an oil level sensor in the sub tank. If that one closes, you should get a warning on the helm gage and oil transfer is disabled until you top up level in that tank enough to get rid of the warning.

Hope this helps a bit.
