Help My engine does not engage.

I have a 1998 225 ox hp salt water series. When I attempt to put the throttle in gear nothing happens. No alarms come on and the water pump is working, The rpms register increasing rpms but the gears do not engage. There is no griding sound and the propeller does not turn. Any suggestions greatly appreciated
