Can anybody outline the steps involved in replacing the water pump on a 2004 Yamaha VMAX 150. And do you recommend using a water pump repair kit or just changing the impeller. Any help with the project will be greatly appreciated.

Best to install a kit - it will have new gasket and o-rings, impeller and cup, woodruff key, and dowell pins.
Basically, here are the steps:
1)remove prop
2)remove trim tab (anode)
3)disconnect speedo tube
4)loosen/remove all lower unit bolts (don't forget the one under the trim tab), and drop down lower unit - tilt motor so drive shaft will clear.
5)do water pump repair - use exploded diagram in shop manual and apply marine grease to the impeller and cup, and thread sealer to the water pump bolts (I use Permatex 14A thread sealer with Teflon). I use thick grease (Mobil 1 synthetic) to hold the o-rings in place while installing the impeller cup.
6)apply grease to the drive shaft splines and re-install the lower unit. Best to have the remote control in neutral and the lower unit also. You may have to turn the flywheel just a little to get the crank end splines to line up with the drive shaft. Best to have a helper do this.
When you "stab" the lower unit, have someone feed the speedo tube back thru the hole in the upper casing and also line up the water pump tube and gear shift rod while you are holding the lower unit.
7)apply thread sealer on the lower unit bolts and torque per manual
8)apply grease to the prop shaft and install the prop - use new cotter pin
9)install trim tab
10)re-connect speedo tube
