  • 40 RUNNING BAD

I HAVE A 40 ELN THAT IS COLD NATURED AND STUMBLING OUT OF THE HOLE. CHECKED PLUGS AND FOUND BOTTOM PLUG RUNNING LEAN. CLEANED CARBS AND BACKED IDLE SCREW A QUARTER TURN ON BOTTOM CARB. NOW IT CRANKS UP AND RUNS BETTER THAN EVER EVEN WHEN COLD. BUT STILL MISING ON HOLE-SHOT ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME BUT NOT AS BAD WHEN MOTOR IS WARM. WHAT DO I DO NEXT? PLEASE HELP

Did you disassemble the carbs? or just spray carb cleaner down the throat? Most likely your carb bowls need to come off and the idle and main jets and passages need to be cleaned out. Get some Berryman's Chemtool spray (Walmart) and remove the jets and spray through each orifice to clean 'em out.

I DISASSEMBLED THE CARBS AND CLEANED THEM MOTOR RAN GREAT FOR ABOUT 5 FULL WEEKENDS OF RUNNING (ABOUT 20 HOURS) THEN MOTOR STARTED RUNNING BAD AGAIN. I HAVE A NEW FUEL TANK, NEW FUEL LINES, AND JUST ADDED A RACOR FILTER. I ALSO PUT A NEW FILTER AND HOUSING IN THE ENGINE. AFTER ALL OF THIS I DISASSEMBLED CARBS AND CLEANED AGAIN. THIS TIME IT SEEMS TO IDLE SMOOTHER AND NOT AS HARD TO START BUT STILL STUMBLES OUT OF THE HOLE SOMETIMES. JUST BOUGHT NEW PLUGS AND SEAFOAM TODAY TO SEE IF THAT HELPS. I AM GOING TO CHECK COMPRESSION WHEN I CHANGE THE PLUGS AND RUN THE RIVER THIS EVENING.I WILL POST RESULTS TONIGHT. THANKS
