If it starts sometimes, and the other times not....this sounds like a bad connection either battery side or starter side. Start with the basics...here are a few: confirm battery is fully charged (12.6v); confirm battery terminals are clean and starter terminals are clean; confirm good connections to both; with cables connected to battery, disconnect cables at starter and meter test voltage.Jason

If your getting "NO CRANK", are you getting any clicking under the cowl, near the starter?
T&T works? Everything else works?
Part #32 is your starter relay which may very well be failing (just old age/use):

Electric problems
Thanks guy for response . Get clicking now and then not all the time . I suspect the starter or the relay is this something one can do on his own ? If I don't want to deal with it now how can I winterize the motor with out it starting?

Where are your batteries located? Middle of boat in console or in back?
I wouldn't start replacing starters etc without confirmation they are actually bad. They are typically expensive. Not too hard to find a electrical repair joint that can bench test starters. Unless you live on an island.Last edited by pstephens46; 10-22-2017, 04:14 PM.

When you jump it, it should spin over (if the starter is good).
Turn the key on, muffs with water on, jump it, should fire up...
Do what ever winterizing you need to do.
*The starter relay clicks WHENEVER it's activated (you just can't hear it).
When it fails, you hear the solenoid moving but the contact points inside, which conduct the current are crappy and DON'T pass full voltage to the starter (If the relay is bad), no crank..
Both are easy to change out but as posted, you need to do some testing and see EXACTLY what is failing/failed..
Here's a pic of my starter relay contacts when it failed (I cut it apart to see):

If you click on the parts link I posted earlier:
2001 V150TLRZ Yamaha Outboard ELECTRICAL 2 Diagram and Parts
it shows where the relay is... Should you have to change that out, generally, it's not difficult. Relays are more common to failure....
Lug #18 on the starter is where you would "jump to": http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ya...TOR/parts.html

A couple of things. Is the battery you used to jump the engine a KNOWN good battery? Say from your truck.
Also are the jumper cables KNOWN to be good? That has come up on here before...
If both are good, take the starter in and have it bench tested as previously mentioned...go from there.

Put a volt meter on that terminal and have someone turn the key to crank. You should see close to 12 volts.
If there IS 12 volts (or close when cranking), the starter is in question.
If the jumper battery IS GOOD, again, the starter is in question.
Or (not as likely if you've been using the engine regularly) the engine isn't "free" to turn over..
Wouldn't be the first time the brushes wore out (inside the starter).Scott

I've came to the decision to shut the motor down for the year have the boat in storage as of right now I took the starter off and will take it with me to get checked somewhere on the road .My question is how to winterize it properly . I pulled the plugs and sprayed some sea foam and turned the flywheel 20 or so times and drained the vst tank . Is this sufficient ?

For the proper winterization, obviously it should be running.
The top end of the engine sounds like it'd fine, but there's lots of shiny parts
in the bottom end that would like excess oil before shutting down for many months...Scott
