  • 2004 300 hpdi cranks, pops no start

I have a 2004 300 hpdi z300txrc 25"shaft that I have been trying to bring back to life after fuel fire on port side. I have replaced all harnesses on motor. Both injector drivers, water seperator, vst, high pressure fuel pump and both rails. Motor has 125 psi across all cylinders. I have yds hooked up and I have 52 psi at vst and 876 psi while cranking. I have spark at all cylinders, fuel seems to be getting to cylinders. It pops and tries to start. I've replaced all filters, low pressure pumps work fine, confirmed I have fuel flow back to a gas tank. VST is clean, I have linked and synced it. It doesn't try to pop hardly at all in neutral, I have to open up throttles in neutral to get it to even 3-400 rpm. I have another 300 on my bass boat so I have been able to swap parts over to test, ecu and injector drivers, rectifier and stator, pulsar , ecu relay , fuel rails and injectors all have been swapped and work perfect on my other boat. I'm at a loss. My kill switch doesn't work when lanyard is pulled out it doesn't show any change on the yds software. When I unhook it and put the two connectors together it shows kill switch activated and the alarm goes off. So the switch is stuck shut which should still make it start. I pulled the kill switch off my other boat and no change.
Dealer cant get boat in till novemeber and at that time will have no season left. Any help would be great.

if it has good compression and good spark at the correct time, then it has to be it does not have the correct fuel to air ratio for the cylinders to fire properly.
too little fuel or too much fuel

      hpdi no start

I did try to squirt some fuel into cylinders, didn't seem to help. motor will only start and idle with throttle blades wide open in neutral. But only will go to about 450 rpm.

Something screwy electrically speaking on this thing. Besides, those motors don't fire all 6 cylinders in neutral anyway. Not sure if advancing the throttle while starting makes good diagnostic sense. Rodbolt is good with these fun hpdi critters.

Yeah I know they only fire on 4 when in neutral and fire on all six when in gear. The only way I can get it to even start is advancing throttle. But rpm doesn't go nearly high enough to start dropping cylinders. Local dealer isn't any help and next dealer is 2 hours away.

If you have to open the throttles to get it to even fire off then you are adding more air, maybe too much fuel for proper start

post a screen shot of the motor off key on.
maybe someone can see what you are not

I'll post up a screen shot of everything on yds when I get home later today.

                thanks everybody so far

                    hpdi no start

Another thing I noticed on my tach my water separator indicator is flashing. I have swapped 2 other water separator's that I know are good and still flashes. I even confirmed that if the float comes up I get the alarm so I know the circuit is working correctly. Just thought I would throw it out there. I also have the low pressure pumps removed with the holley marine red fuel pump (7 psi 67 gph). I know its getting fuel, dumped fuel line overflow into gas can . About a gallon per minute. I have the same fuel pump setup on my bass boat with zero issues. I thought possibly that it might be flooding if the vst float isn't working right so I installed a lower 38 gph pump in its place. Does the vst float shut the medium pressure pump off when it is made or does it only control the fuel flow out of the vst?

                      She runs

Well I figured it out with the help from John at Hydro Tec. The only thing I didn’t swap was the flywheel. The magnet underneath the flywheel the collar was cracked and it must’ve been off about 80°. So I put my other flywheel on the motor from my bass boat and she’s alive

I never would have guessed timing off almost 90 deg.
how can it move almost 1/4 way around?

                          Collar

Collar has one hole in it and another magnet in opposite hole. It cracked in the hole with no magnet in it. Going to find a used flywheel

Could you please post pics of the broken flywheel? I would be very interested in seeing them as I had a very odd flywheel problem a few years ago and it was a real bugger to find it was the cause of my engine trouble.

Bound to be a few available. Don't see that many 300 HDPI's running around anymore.

                              Edit- Looky what I found....
