I wonder if these smaller four stroke engines had that system from the get go? l looked at service manuals for several F15 and couldn't find any mention of them....except in trouble shooting section for low compression..maybe I am blind.

Of course Boscoe came up with a diagram...
Maybe not from the get go but as far back as 2001 the electric start models got one camshaft and the manual start models got a different one. One with compression release.

The SM won't make mention of the differences in the camshaft. From an installation standpoint there is no difference. The parts catalog will show different camshafts.

It is a link to the Yamaha parts catalog from where I copied the image that I posted. I am still trying to figure out what is with Yams website. Thought I had it. Obviously not.

Might be the browser since I can open it.

I think I'd do a leak down test with the piston(s) just PAST TDC and perhaps loosen the valves to make sure the cylinder is fully sealed...

** As long as the valves are fully closed, you'll get an accurate reading / percentage.

Valve adjustment is a simple screw and lock nut...

My old Kawasaki motorcycle (KLR 250) had an automatic compression release on the EXHAUST CAM. Disconnect the weighted spring and it was easily 3 times harder to kick start...

I had a KZ 750 twin when I was a ****ager....starter fried...kick only. What a beast to get going and no decompression on it. Bloody thing

Ok so I checked the valve lash. It was within specs but on the tighter side of the specs. So I loosened them up to the lest tight side of the specs. It was a lot smoother and less vibration. However I loss a few MPH and doesn't seem to have as much power.
