Damper seal has been discussed many times. Condition, cleaning etc.

You mentioned it in another thread about a motor overheating.

What is the purpose of this seal and how does it affect cooling?

If it is the one next to the water pump, from what I have read it is there to help seal off the exhaust gases from getting into the water pump.
water is needed to cool the motor, exhaust gases do not cool the motor well

it keeps gases from the pump area and the driveshaft area.
otherwise smoke/gases come up the shaft area and out around the tiller area.
however if a pump job is done and the damper not cleaned it can hold the wear plate up and create a low speed overheat.

I feated a LU on a F50 without the damper seal and the result was the motor spitting water under the bottom cowling.
The water seems to raise with the drive shaft rotation.

Fortunately just used the motor with fresh water on a tank to sync the carbs while didnt had the damper seal

Reminds me of the two hpdi motors recently reported with excess bubbles and steam out of the idle ports. 200 and 300 models. No solution was mentioned or reported by OPs. Could this have been the issue? We may never know...
