Have a friend who has an 85 or 86 115hp Yamaha that is on his dad's old Dorsett which he is wanting to sell. His dad bought the motor new used it for 2 yrs and then passed away. He says it probably has less than 50 hrs use, has been stored in the garage ever since but taken out each year and ran on muffs for a few minutes. The numbers he gave me are 115 AETO 6ES-L351667 He says it has a problem with a small tank inside the engine housing that he thinks is for emergency use. It over fills and when it does a small tube which he thinks is a breather tube delivers the oil into the carbs causing the engine to smoke. Is this a problem anyone else has had and can anyone tell me by the numbers he gave me what year this motor is. I am looking to replace an old Merc and was considering this motor if it sound like a reasonable fix. Thanks for your time and help.

The only tank under the hood that I can think of is the main oil tank. It gets oil from a boat mounted tank and then feeds the oil to the oil pump. A fault in the oil transfer can cause the engine mounted oil tank to be over filled. There is a breather tube from the engine mounted oil tank to the air intake silencer.
Based on the serial number it looks to have been made circa 1984. Could have been sold and placed into service in 1985 or 1986. -

You are correct it is a 5 not an S and your description of the issue sounds right on. So question is, is it an expensive fix? Is it something I could do?Comment

A motor over 30 years old that set up for long periods of time may not be a good buy.
could be it was stored properly each time it was put away, but I would not bet on that happening.
that being said,getting and Reading a service manual for the motor will help you work on the motor and probably help you decide if you want to tackle the troubleshooting and repairs yourselfComment
