  • 1991 Yamaha 200 TXRP Speed Drop Activates

I have a 1991 200 TXRP that has run flawlessly. The other day motoring in when over 4000 rpm the speed drop function activated and the rpm's dropped to 2000 and would not rev higher. At the same time the green/yellow/red oil indicators were flashing. I shifted into neutral and the indicators stopped flashing. I checked both the engine and reserve oil tanks which were full. Ran it again under 4000 with no issues but over 4000 the same thing happened after a minute. No audible alarms went off. When the key turns on the alarm does go off for a few seconds so it appears to be working. I changes the water pump which looked OK and the thermostats.

We went back out and after 5 miles of driving the same thing happened. I reset it by putting the shifter in neutral and kept the rpm's around 2500. As the seas got rougher the problem started to happen more.....this time the 3 indicator lights would flash...........then the tack display went blank and the motor speed drop function activated. Also, when I turned this motor off and restarted it to let it idle....the tack display would go off and the key alarm sounded as if the motor stalled..........but the motor was still running fine at idle.

The tach signal going out just before the problem started leads me to think this is electrical or possibly the CDI Box ??

I checked the alarms with the lanyard off......when I turned the key on, cranked the motor then left the key in the on position....no alarm sounded. ON the other motor when I did the same thing when the key returned to the on position from cranking and intermittent alarm went off. Despite the fact that the alarm goes off when the key is in the "on" position with the lanyard in does the above test mean my alarm is not working and it should have activated when the above problem occurred? Also....the temp indicator in the guage did NOT go off.

I read a few threads that the motor could be filled with Lyme/Calcium so I will try to get Rydlyme to flush it which seemed to work on a few threads I read.

I am also going to check all the electrical connections as the tach cutting out as the problem occurred has me concerned.

Any input would be helpful, Thanx.

I believe Boscoe posted not long ago about low voltage can cause the 3 oil lights blinking.
also low voltage can shut down the guages

All three lights flashing at the same time, when the motor is not over heating and the oil system is working correctly indicates a low voltage situation. Inspect, clean and reattach all electrical connections. Check the fuses for cleanliness and tightness.

Update........we changed the fuel filters, plugs and checked all the electrical connections (snugged them up) and yesterday the motor ran flawlessly. Today we will flush the scale out and retest.

Interesting thing I learned.........when the port motor goes into speed drop mode the starboard motor also runs crappy and won't rev....is this a safety thing ??

Be bad if one motor dropped to 2000rpm when other motor is running 5500 rpm. You could try it sometime just for S&G!

Battery was fine............some of the grounds on the motor were a bit corroded.

I mentioned in a different thread yesterday that I save all the sweet schematics/charts/etc. boscoe posts. Told ya.

That is real good info to know. I'm pretty sure there probably was one connection that was bad as we did give them all a loosening and re tightening. We will be hitting the water this weekend.

                          Update:

Tested the boat in the Hudson River and it ran perfect....no speed drop activation. This past weekend we went out to the Ocean and withing 4 miles of easy cruising.....2800 rpm the motor acted up.....speed drop activated and now the temp light flashed. The problem got worse as the weekend went on.

Came back and put it back in the Hudson River and it acted up immediately so here is what we did:

                          - Changed CDI box and it still acted up.
                          - Pulled both thermostats out and made sure water was coming out...it was.
                          - One side of the head was hotter though so we left that thermostat out and it ran fine.
                          - Went to drive back to the launch and the speed drop activated.
                          - Now.....pulled the thermocouple wires and it ran for an hour no problems.
                          - Plugged then in one at a time and found the bad one that activated the speed drop....it was on the same head the thermostat was bad
                          - The thermostat was brand new......***.
                          - I know the head was not overheating as after pulling the thermostat and running it the same hot area was now cool to the touch.

                          - I ordered new thermocouples to verify this fixes the problem.
                          - I will also install an actual temp guage.
                          - I will compression test the motor to make sure a head gasket is not blown.

easy to test the thermostat and overheat sensor or switch.

do that before spending more money on parts.

More than likely they are not your problem, but I could be wrong.

Thermostat we tested and was bad.....partially opened at 200 degrees.

Thermocoupler was also tested. We put the one on from the good motor and no problems............so I ordered a new one.

So far I have not spent any money other than thermostats and water pump kits. I have 4 yamaha 200TXRP's so I can swap parts for testing from the good working ones.

Are there any other ways to test it ??
