My meter is a Klein CL200 and the DVA is this.

So I tested the charge coil loaded. It calls for 60v and I got 35v, and 100v and I only got 6-7v and dropping quick. So open it tests fine and connected it fails. What do you think? Thanks!

Sorry you said to do all tests both ways. Here are the results.

Everything connected. I assume this is "connect" in the manual.
CDI to coil - 0V, spec is 130V
      Charge coil - 35V between R-BR, 6V and dropping between R-Blue, spec is 60V and 100V.
      Pulser coil - 10V, spec is 5V

Disconnected. I assume this is "open" in the manual.
CDI to coil - climbs to 105V over 6-8 seconds where I stop, spec is zero
      Charge coil - 90V between R-BR, 125V between R-Blue, spec is 55V and 90V
      Pulser coil - 11V, spec is 7V.

Hopefully that isn't super confusing how I wrote it.

looks like the charge coils reads in spec when unloaded, but loaded it does not meet spec.
to me that means CDI is dragging it down.
        Lets see what Rodbolt says

I was kind of thinking along the same lines. Throws me more doubt since if you follow the procedure loaded, the conclusion is to replace the charge coil. If you follow it unloaded, the conclusion is to replace the CDI. Hopefully since rodbolt nailed it with it failing loaded before I tested it, he's run into it before..

yea, reading the manual it says to use a test harness.
My thoughts are that this allows for the connected/loaded testing.
like you said yours fails the loaded

the manual does not say anything about testing unloaded, or what that means even tho it gives a spec for it.

the kill switch and key switch ground the white wire I believe to kill spark out of the cdi, make sure it is not dragging the voltage down

The white wire has been disconnected as well as the main harness going up to the remote station. I've checked it for continuity to ground and there is none.

was this also when doing the voltage testing?

Yes sir it was the first thing I did and I've just kept it unplugged. Cranking it with a remote starter switch I bought.

Hopefully Rodbolt will drop back in soon and give some good advice

Looks like maybe he's not. I hate the fact that the tests loaded and unloaded say to replace a different part. My best bet might be to just suck it up and take it to a shop since I might get stuck with an expensive part (both of them) that can't be returned. When it was looking it looks like to replace the charge coil you have to get the whole stator? Thanks again.

Modify the title adding something like "Rodbolt need more advice" to the end to see if that will get his attention.
or start a new thread with the reading you got so n he does not have to read thru all of this one to find the info

like I said. something down stream of the charge coils is loading down the system.

Now I understand when you said "what is loading it"...I thought you were saying what is loading up the capacitors, not what is loading down the system. So if I follow correctly, you're thinking that even though the pulser coil output tests ok that it isn't discharging the CDI, or that the CDI is bad and just not discharging? Thanks again.
