  • 250 ox66 oil indicator shows full all the time

I notice my yamaha oil bar indicator always shows full on the dash even when the tank is not full. What should i be checking for first to determine if the gauge is faulty or it is coming from the oil tank.. Is there a oil sensor inside the tank that reads oil level, or something else. Thanks....

oil level indicate is taken from the switch in the remote tank.
a quick test is simply unplug the connector and watch the tach with key on engine off.

Are you talking about the right hand oil bar on a Yamaha multi-function tachometer? Sounds like it but...

What tank are you talking about? The tank on the motor or the tank in the boat?

If you keep the boat mounted tank supplied with oil then the right hand bar will normally be solid all of the time. All three oil status bars will be solid. The right hand bar disappears, and the middle bar starts flashing, when the boat mounted tank gets low on (but not out) oil. The middle bar flashing is the sign that oil should be added to the boat mounted oil tank.

The engine mounted oil tank will rise and fall and rise again as the motor is being used. You won't see this happening on the Yamaha tachometer. If and when the engine mounted oil tank gets low on oil, then the left bar will start flashing, the horn will sound, and the motor will put itself into RPM reduction mode. Time to immediately stop the motor.

As rodbolt says, disconnect the oil harness connector in the engine pan. A dark blue connector with four wires that lead to the boat mounted oil tank. Turn the key to the on position only. The right hand bar should disappear and the middle bar should begin to flash.

Now if you want to do a full system test, remove the sight sump on the engine mounted oil tank. Drain the oil into a clean container. Put the oil in the boat mounted oil tank. Make sure the boat mounted oil tank has plenty of oil. Clean, reattach and secure the sump. Turn the key to the on position only. Wait a bit of time. The alarm will sound. The oil status bars (all three) will be flashing. The oil pump will turn on and commence to transfer oil from the boat tank to the engine tank. When the engine tank is about half full the alarm will stop. The bars will stop flashing and be solid. The oil will continue to be transferred for either three minutes time from when the key was turned on or until the engine tank is almost full, at which time the pump will stop.
