  • Transom Bolt Holes

    I picked up a 91 90hp that I mounted on a 94 tracker, one thing I see that I think is odd is that there are only bolt holes at the top of the transom mount on the motor. There are none near the bottom. Any suggestions? right now I only have it mounted bolts. Will this work? or should I start drilling holes?

    I would add the holes that are supposed to be there.

    It is a mystery what people do and why they do it.

      There are 4 individual holes near top of bracket and a sliding hole near bottom. The engine needs to be mounted to transom with 4 points of fixation.

      If the engine is currently mounted using the top hole of the 4 holes (#1), then you'll want to drill a thru hole at the bottom of the sliding hole. If the engine ever needs to be lowered a hole or two there will be space above the bottom mounting bolts.

        This really helped. For some inexplicable reason the sliding holes at the bottom were filled with silicone and painted over?? All is good now thanks again.

          I would go about it a different way. I would first inspect the position of the anti-ventilation plate with respect to the bottom of the boat. Ideally it will be an inch or so above the bottom. Maybe parallel with the bottom but no lower.

          Better still, run the boat at cruise speed, engine trimmed up just to the normal trim angle position, and inspect the water flow over the anti-ventilation plate. The top of the plate should be clearly visible.

          I would drill the holes so that the motor can be raised if needed. 99% of motors seem to need to go up. I can't recall hearing of one that needs to come down.

            sounds like he already has the bottom holes in the boat, the filled and painted over so he just could not see them

              Got me confused.

              How does filling the slotted hole in the lower section of the clamp bracket, with a bolt being installed, help the situation? If that is the case.

              Or is there actually a bolt there that was not recognized as being a bolt in the first place?

              Without any photos boscoe is lost as to the situation.

                I though he meant the holes in boat were filled and painted over so he could not see them to clean out and put bolts into.
                now that I reread his original post it sounds like the slotted holes in motor bracket were the places filled and painted over

                  I don't know the real situation. This communication over the inner web with just words is difficult.

                  This is one reason that Yamaha USA does not use email for customer support. Guy receiving the message does not really understand the question being asked. But he gives an answer anyway. Guy receiving the reply does not understand the reply. So he proceeds to drill a hole into the motor. Then it is all Yamaha's fault. Customer wants a new motor because Yamaha told him to drill a hole in it.

                  Which makes me fully understand the replies that Honda and Suzuki customer support always give. Take it to a dealer, take it to a dealer, take it to a dealer.

                    I take it as the transom holes were filled and painted...I guess because why the heck would someone fill the bracket sliding hole with silicone and paint over it?? But then again, you can't fix stupid.
