      Probably wrong, but I'd replace the broken spring FIRST.

      Then adjust..

        If you are good you might set the tension without the spring, but since they do not say how much tension to apply you would be guessing.

        At least the OP does not have to worry about the belt being loose because the spring broke.
        The bolt locks the tension .
        just cannot readjust without the spring
