  • Replacing Head & Cylinder Head Cover Gaskets

I have been looking at replacement gaskets on a well known auction website for my twin 115hp 2-stroke Yamaha V4s. It is not clear on the advertisements whether the item are "genuine Yamaha parts".
As a gasket is not a moving part, how critical is it to use genuine Yamaha gaskets?
    Many thanks.

If it doesn't say genuine Yamaha OEM, you can be sure it isn't. Yamaha makes a high quality gasket that is reflected by their high price.

Shot in the dark really. I have used aftermarket head gaskets on motorcycles with good success...but I had my hands on them before I bought them and could examine them before I bought them.

I would go with Yamaha gaskets if you can afford them and avoid a possible do over.

Yamaha does not make their gaskets. And they are pricey.

I personally would take a chance with aftermarket gaskets. But then I remember the days of yesteryear when it was not uncommon for a shade tree mechanic to make his own gaskets.

That is a low compression motor and the likelihood of a gasket failure will be low. We are not talking about a high compression four stroke model. I suspect you will be at greater risk of breaking a head bolt upon installation of the head and cover, certainly if a torque wrench is not employed.

And if a gasket were to fail it will be so much easier to remove the bolts, head and head cover the next time around.

Having said that, you can't go wrong with a Yamaha branded gasket.

Many thanks everyone for the replies and excellent advice. Food for thought, but looking at going down the, more expensive, genuine Yamaha parts road.
