  • 1984 90 ETLK lower unit issues

    Hey Guys,

I have a 1984 90 ETLK that keeps breaking the small shift shaft inside the prop shaft. I ordered the new part(upgraded) 2 times but still failed. Replaced the prop shaft, still failed. It breaks when the motor is in forward on plane.

    Any Ideas??

    Thanks

Give a part number of the shift shaft you speak of
    The K says it is a 1985
    is this it?

    How where is it breaking?

Is your part on this parts list?

You said INSIDE the PROP shaft?

Yes the shaft is #43 and the piece it fits into is #49. It has broken both the end off the shaft and once it broke the little slot that it fits into on the other piece. Kinda hard to describe. Its the little shaft that has the spring and ball bearings inside. That shaft has a service bulletin #85-011 which is a heavier shaft. Bought it twice($300) once because the prop shaft was slightly tweaked(replaced) and another time because we figured out that there was only one of the ball bearings in it which there should be two, corrected that but still failed. Thanks Guys

typically it breaks due to a bad clutch or gear.
I had one snap once when loaded on the dyno.

That was my thought, both are worn quite a bit. So by the time time I buy all that I can get a re manufactured complete lower. Anybody got a good source for one and or what lower might swap with that one? Thanks again.

look up the lower unit part number on this site, it will show all of the different motors that that part number is on
