  • watching an F225 "poppet valve" work

so, nice thing about the one-piece Pressure Control Valve used on some engines
is that it can easily be observed outside its natural habitat

this afternoon's project was to take an old F225 PCV and hook it up to "the garden hose"

I have decent water flow and about 60 psi static pressure at the hose

the test setup, without PCV, saw about 50 psi dynamic (with water flowing)

    here's video
    without valve

with the PCV in place - the max pressure was reduced to ~35 psi

Look at you go with the show and tell... Good on ya fairdeal.

Did you by any chance explore at what pressure the poppet valve began to waste off excess cooling water? It looked like prior to 20 PSI just a little was bypassing.

I have a pressure gauge somewhere in the shed that I used to calibrate my irrigation pump switch. I wonder what pressure a fresh waterpump kit puts out at idle VS an old worn out one, and again at 3300 RPM cruise.
If its got teats or tires, you bound to have trouble with it....

      I have only 2 questions.
      does it overheat?
      is the beer cold?
if the answer to #1 is no the answer to #2 should be yes.

I started to see some flow through the valve as low as 10 psi

now this was an old, used valve - would have been nice to try a new one

Boscoe some years ago actually sawed a "viewing port" into a lower unit!

although I can't recall what he was demonstrating with that...

What was being demonstrated was that if water was provided to the motor via the garden hose flush port only, that water would fill the block and flow back down the water pump tube to the water pump. And in so doing would lubricate the water pump. Showing that running the motor, at idle, would not harm the water pump impeller or the motor itself.

But I am not going to suggest that anybody do this. God forbid I will be chastised for contradicting what is stated in the holy grail, the Yamaha owner's manual.

Good job on the valve demo.

I think Boscoes video showed how much water came DOWN from the flushing port to the WP (lubricating/cooling it).

IE flush while running W/O muffs if I remember correctly.

That poppet valve is WAY different than the F150's...
