  • Thought I hurt it....

Thought maybe I had fried the ICV and or ECU. In a hurry at boatlift yesterday. I switched off motor. Got up this morning and the key was on. All night. Battery was low and ICV was very warm.

    Running in driveway now....

Naw, but your engine has "alot more hours on it!".

      nope

the ECU wont log engine hours at key on engine off.
the Yamaha hour meter needs a tach signal to log.
some elcheapo meters log anytime they have power.
      but not a Yamaha ECU.

Ran it about 20 mins to recharge the one weak battery. I assume it is ok.
Read somewhere that you would overheat and damage the ICV by doing this.

Really don't understand why. The ICV resets after you turn engine off for next start. Wonder why it generates heat if it is not moving?
I was hoping Rod might elaborate.

at key on engine off the main relay is energized.
the ISC simply sits there waiting on the ECU to toggle it to alter the idle speed.
as it is off the ecu wont toggle it.

Does not make any sense that it would be very warm sitting there waiting for the ECU to toggle it.

unless you turned the key off before pulling the cowling.
that should make the ECU try to toggle it to the full open position.
being battery drained ,the voltage is low causing more current if it was able to move at all.

Would be nice to know what model of motor we are talking about.

If the valve is getting warm with just the key on I would suspect a faulty ground wire.

Check all of the ground leads from the ISC valve for any connection to a ground point. There should not be any with just the key on.

Is a Yamaha $158 digital hour meter an elcheapo? They must be paying you a lot of money if you think so. Or maybe it is just because I am a cheap barstard that I don't think of it being cheap.

It will log time with just the key on if wired to do so.

Cant believe you don't remember my F150.....

Maybe some merit to Solo's opening every single time with " I gots me three F225s"

I turned the key off as soon as I saw it was on. Maybe that was it for the heat.

Like I mentioned, I thought someone commented on the perils of leaving the switch in the on position for extended periods of time.
