True, hence the white smoke when it shut down. I imagine it was pushing oil past the rings when it was bogging down, just not seeing it on the move.

It is definitely the cause of all the gas in the crankcase.
Thank you to all who replied. This should save me from a serious bill......
If the crankcase is still empty, I'd leave the drain plug out and the filler cap as well so all fuel gases can evaporate till your ready to re-assemble the pump / engine.Scott

It has been out all day and will stay out until I get the new part.... I smelled that stale gas odor last season after the shop replaced a cracked water pump housing....
The diaphragm looks like it has ethanol disease....literally melting apart and has a thin area like a bubble. Will use straight gas from now on. We have several ethanol free pumps in the area.....thankfully it was a simple fix. Just hope no damage was done before it pooped out...
