  • 1990 130HP carb flooding... This might help someone..

First I want to thank the people here for all the help they provide.
I have been using this site to troubleshoot problems with my Yamaha and it has been a very valuable tool to me.

I wanted to post about one issue I had with one of of my carburetor flooding. Hopefully this might help someone down the line.

    History:

Got this used 1990 Yamaha 130HP 2 strokes few weeks ago. It didn't idle quite right, rough at times. After removing the air intake, I noticed that the bottom carb was leaking while priming. Typical of a stuck needle valve. it was time for a clean up and possibly rebuild.
Removed carbs, gave them a thorough clean up, replaced the needle, needle spring, float and shaft. Also replaced the O ring on the main jet. Adjusted the float according to specs 16mm for this motor.
I also, replaced the main fuel line, inspected the other fuel lines to carbs and pump for possible issues, all looked good. Replaced the fuel pump (faulty check valve) and cleaned up the fuel strainer.

Did a pressure test with vacuum, all good.....

Well, after 2 hours it was leaking again, same carb, same side... It seemed to be testing ok when fuel wasn't present but once in use it would leak.

Got the carbs out again, no obvious contamination but one of needle seat on the bottom carb wasn't really clean (blackish color) compare to the other ones. You can't replace them, they are pressed in.
Carb cleaner, Qtips, I tried all I could but never really got it 100%. You don't want to use brute force here or you'll mess up the seat.
Here is a video from Youtube that I found and solved that problem. Worked great.

PS: I didn't use any power tool I gently rotated the bbq skewer by hand.

The second issue was the gasket. On one side ( the leaky side) the rubber gasket extended in the bowl area. It is useless for it to extend that much and it possibly, once submerge with gas, curled up enough that it prevented the float to function properly. I trimmed a tiny bit of the gasket and that combined with the cleaning of the needle-seat solved the issue.

So, not sure if it was the needle seat or the rubber gasket but it has been working ok now for 2 weeks.
Not saying that it is necessarily your issue but something worth looking at if you've done everything else...
