  • Missing Serial Number on Saltwater Series V-x 250

I inherited a pair of Yamaha engines from my father, who was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Maryland. Unfortunately, one of the engines is a used 250hp Saltwater Series (year unknown) he bought a year or two before he passed, and since the boat has arrived in Texas I discovered the serial number plate on the mounting bracket is missing. I have removed the cowling and spent several hours looking for the secondary serial number -- both the sticker and the freeze plug -- but no luck. And so far we cannot locate the paperwork. Appreciate any guidance.

I neglected to mention it is a Saltwater Series V-x 76-degree model, so it is EFI (I believe). Forgive me as I am a rank novice at this stuff right now.

V-x usually means EFI. X as in OX.

I am pretty confident that is accurate -- does that impact where this "secondary" serial number might be placed? In other words, did Yamaha place them in different locations?

The alternate serial number is on a round sticker that usually is in the vicinity of the starter motor. If the main ID is gone the alternate ID may also be gone.

It will look like this https://www.google.com/search?q=yama...sYbQYQjg6m3DM:

Being in Texas, with Texas being a titling state, you may have a problem getting a Texas title. You might call the titling folks and see what advice they can offer if proof of the motor ID cannot be obtained.

dang thieves remove IDs to keep from getting in trouble.
causes problems for law abiding people tho.

Did he buy it from a regular dealer or maybe police auction.

do you have any paperwork from when he bought it?

I will be thoroughly checking his files next week. Dad served in the Marines and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and did everything by the book. There is no way he has a stolen motor.

He could have bought a stolen motor from a proper source.
Just need the sales info to prove it

                        the V-X 76 was a carbed motor.
                        the VX250 was an EFI.
                        take off the hood.
                        look.
does it have 6 individual carbs or a throttle body with six shutters stacked in a vertical line.
