  • 1996 Yamaha 30HP Two Stroke - Fuse Blowing

Having just re-installed the motor on to the boat after the winter, and re-positioned the battery and fuel tanks I have a problem whereby the 50A fuse keeps blowing. Can anybody shed some light on the probable fault tracing route I should follow to determine the cause?

Repositioned the battery, maybe the battery cables are hooked up wrong, I know seems simple enough, but possible and probable,

Go back over your work carefully. Something you did when making the changes to your batteries position is at fault, I would think. Should be too hard to find if it is blowing a 50 amp fuse.

Does the fuse blow immediately when the battery switch is turned on?

Marine environments are tough on electric gear, especially connections. Corrosion at connections creates resistance that lowers voltage which then can drive up current or amps. Since fuses are sized for amps just above required, a simple bad connector in the circuit can be an issue.

I near sent a brand new gps unit back because it cut out after 10 minutes. Come to find the inline fuse serving the main console was corroded. While it didn't blow, it dropped the voltage below the threshold built into the gps's circuitry and it cut-out. Luckily I leaned on the horn just as I was pulling it off the console and noticed it didn't sound. That got me looking elsewhere.

I suggest sequentially disconnecting, cleaning, assembling and applying to each connection starting at the battery negative and returning to the battery positive. I suggest starting at the negative or ground because ground connections are typically overlooked and often the issue.
