  • 70 TLRQ problem

My 92 70 was running great, stopped to fish, started fine, but wouldn't plane or get over 3000 RPM, no alarms. Removed the carbs, they were clean, went through the adjustments, checked linkages etc. Put the timing light on, and when the pick up is on the #1 plug wire it lights up the timing mark for the #2 cylinder. On the #2 lead it lights the same mark. On the # 3 lead it lights up the #3 cyl timing mark. Checked the crank position sensor and it is within specs.
Any body ever run into this? Would the CDI box be the problem?

    Thanks

if both 1 & 2 indicate at the same spot on flywheel then they both are firing at the same time.
    never heard of this before.
what kind of light are you using?
could it be picking up bad info from transient spikes from other coil

Don't think so good light with inductive pickup. Any idea how the CDI unit picks the right cylinder to fire, as the 3 black/white stripe leads can be hooked in any order?

Anybody have any ideas as to where to look. Coils all test and spark on all 3 cylinders. I understand the engine is a wasted spark system, that is all 3 plugs spark at the same time, I think. But #1 plug fires on #2 BTDC.
Crank sensor and pulse coil test in spec with ohm meter.
Is there any way to test the CDI box with a volt/ohm meter, the manual has the details using a Yamaha test box

          Finally solved the problem.
First the engine is a loss spark system all 3 plugs fire at the same time, every 120 degrees, but with the inductive timing light I had to reverse the pickup ie with the arrow pointing to the coil instead of the plug for it to pick up proper timing.
After changing the CDI unit, pulser coil, fuel lines, fuel filter, spark plugs ( which brought it back to life for a couple of hours) I pulled the flywheel and found the flywheel had been rubbing on the charge coil wire and had worn through the insulation on the blue wire. repaired that and the motor is back to normal.

never heard of a 3 cylinder motor that fired all 3 plugs at the same time.
I believe you are confused about this
