Old Yam Model help

New member here. I appreciate any help and will gladly respond to anyone I can help as well. I bought an older boat a couple months ago (1988 Wellcraft) and it also has an older Yamaha outboard 1996 150 2 stroke.
It appears to be repainted and serial number is worn and can hardly make out any numbers. I tried to contact old owner to no avail and don't see another number on a freeze plug like I have seen mentioned. Even my local Yamaha dealer was not very helpful when I called him. Please any help would be great.

Hmmm. It works for me.

If the OP cannot get it to work he can go to Yamaha Outboards and hover over the "owner's resources" button. Then click on the owners manuals button. Then select 1998 and the 150 2.6L motor to have the owner's manual come up.

Don't worry about the model year. 1998 will be same as 1996.

Ok, it's working now (was a black page), now white, then loaded...

Probably a bad battery cable... Seems alot of that going around...

is it a pre mix or oil injected motor?
does it have a jet pump?
is it a left turn lower unit?
Are there any markings on the cowling?
how long of a lower unit?
Are you sure it is a 96?
how did you com up with the year?
some of these things can narrow the model # down
