  • New owner c 40 question

First post. I purchased a boston whaler dauntless this winter and it is powered by a 2002 C40 (hope I'm getting the terms correct). I wish I'd found this forum before spending 1/2 trying to start it without understanding the prime system. Anyway, mine is a pre-mix model, not oil injection and I'm trying to determine proper oil ratio. In the manual which really only covers oil injection models, it appears that during break in, you run 50:1 in the tank in addition to the oil injection. This would seem to imply that after break in, the engine runs at 75 or 100:1?

Secondly, what oils are you guys using? Do you run yamalube or is there something you like better.

    Thanks in advance

    normal 50 to 1,
break in usually calls for twice as much oil(25 to 1)
any TC-W3 marine oil will work fine.
synthetic, semi-synthetic, or a blend may be better than just plain

Owner's manual can be read here:

      http://www.yamaha-motor.com/assets/s...-04-75_523.pdf

You can save it to your PC but won't be able to print it. On a PC it makes it easy to look up stuff using the search function.

Running ratio is 50:1. Break in, which should be long past, was 25:1. See page 3-5.

I suggest Pennzoil 100% synthetic for less carbon build up and less smoke. Anything but Yamalube actually.

Thanks guys. For some reason I couldn't find that manual. I'll try the pennzoil. Launch is a couple weeks out yet. The funny thing is we own a carver mariner and I'm more excited to scoot around in this little whaler than cruise int the big boat. I'll return later with more dumb questions I'm sure.

I got much more satisfaction out of my Mirrocraft 14' skiff with a 25 Mercury two smoke than I ever got out of my 22' saltwater boat. Big boat was just too much damn work.

Simple some times can just be better.

I like the Pennzoil 100% Synthetic oil also....it's a bit pricey ($45/gallon) but low smoke and carbon. Remember to use a fuel stabilizer like Stabil in your fuel tank to help prevent ethanol/fuel problems. Learn to drain each carb float chamber maybe twice a year or for any extended lay-up periods....
