    Hello to all!!
    I have a 2005 200 HPDI that has a low rpm all of a sudden, runs like a top on plane but once you get it warm I has idle problems.
    That being said we have tested everything on motor, idle interrupter switch when touched will suddenly kill the motor. When removed from the scenario boat seems to perform just fine???

    Thoughts??

    Also this motor has bad compression in cylinders one and two, pulled the head and all looks great inside so ran a decarbonization and no help. Further investigation leads to discovery of pre-ignition spotting on a couple of the pistons. What could be doing this??

    whuuut????
    cyl 1&2 are on different banks.
    you would have to pull both heads.
    it is a sealed cyl.
    to lose compression means a head failed.
    a head gasket failed or the rings/piston failed.
    NO sensor OR switch should stall the motor.

      What is the complete model identity?

      Is adding one or two letters to the front of the HP value and three or four letters to the end of the HP value so hard to do? You could have save time and effort by not typing "2005, 200 HPDI, 3.0 liter block".

      Is this a Z200, a VZ200 or what?

      There are no 2005 HPDI models of any kind with a 3.0 liter block.

      Regarding "spotting on a couple of pistons" my belief is that is caused by detonation. Detonation can scrub the carbon from the top of a piston if that is what you are describing. If this is a 3.3L HPDI, know that they are more susceptible to detonation than other HPDI models. Many things can cause detonation. Gasoline with a higher octane rating is usually used as a preventative measure, if everything else is working correctly (timing, temperature, etc.)

        Sorry buddy, I am new to the site!! I sincerely appreciate the response and the help!! My motor is a VZ200TLRD. Yes it seems like detonation is the ultimate problem here. But why would this be?? How is this proven or prevented? This is the third time this motor has blown. First at 81 hours, then it made 82 hours, this time almost 400!! I'm just frustrated as heck with this!! My mechanic is very smart and he mentioned the same things as you. Can a guy test the ecm to show the computer is messing up with timing?? That being said the motor is bad enough now it wouldn't be reliable test on it though. I have a bunch of pics from motor insides I can show you if you're interested.

          VZ200TLRD has bad compression on several cylinders now, detonation imlooks to be what has happened, but what is the cause of this? Cylinders look to be drier than usual.

            A VZ200TLRD is a 3.3L HPDI. Referred to as a big block.

            The big block HPDI's are known for having a propensity to suffer from detonation. Usually the number 2 cylinder, but other cylinders can and will fail for the same reason. The innerweb is full of horror stories. Most problematic motor ever made by Yamaha. They should be (actually they are) ashamed of themselves for bringing this dog to the market.

            What can cause/contribute to detonation?
            - Over propping/lugging the engine
            - Gasoline with insufficient octane
            - Ignition timing too far advanced
            - High engine temperature
            - Combustion chamber carbon buildup
            - Over oiling
            - Other

            For some very strange reason the HPDI's do not use a knock sensor. Other Yamaha two strokes have them and also so do later model four strokes. A knock sensor detects detonation and takes action to stop it from happening. Hopefully before the motor is damaged. What was Yamaha thinking by not incorporating the use of a knock sensor? Only they know and they ain't talking.

            What can an owner do to help the motor? Use 91/93 octane, make sure the cooling system is operating properly, prop the motor so that it can run at 6000 RPM when the throttle is wide open, if using a hot foot don't stomp down on the gas pedal when getting onto plane, allow the motor to warm up in gear for a couple of minutes before coming up to speed, use Pennzoil 100% synthetic oil, cross the fingers, etc..

              Yeah,
              Well this is the third time for the powerhead, once at 81 hours, then it went 82 hours, then almost 400😢😢. I can't believe this crap!! But getting fixed now and sending it down the road!! I have always had cavitation problems with this boat out of the hole, came with a 14 1/2 inch, 3 blade, 23 pitch prop from factory. Used to get 6,000 Rpms but not since the first time they fixed it!! I mentioned this to my mechanic not to long ago and he looked at throttle body and said it wasn't opening all the way yet computer showed 100% what the heck??

                    Yamaha leads, others follow.

                    Where happened to the "Bold New Rotor/Flywheel/Damper"? I guess it got overtaken by the graphics.
