  • Things one can learn on other forums

    Just saw this today:

"I had the exhaust stack replaced in my 2004 225hp last week.

    It also needed thermostat housings.

When the work is performed, the oil pump should be checked for wear

and the water jacket behind the thermostats should be checked for corrosion.

Substantial corrosion can set up there in the water jacket

but Yamaha has an epoxy procedure for repairing it."

don't leave us hanging, what is the procedure?

Yes, what is the procedure please. And cite the bulletin number if you will.

What I have learned from one other forum in particular is that folks don't have to know squat about that which they purport themselves to be speciallissts.

For instance, any two batteries that are not exactly of the same brand, model, size, type, voltage and age, if paralleled together, will cause any electrical generation system to fail. Fail catastrophically at that.

I have read so much garbage on various forums, watched garbage video, got banned from a site over a moderator posting how to test T-stats on a crossflow jonny/rude V4 that was and is simply wrong and could lead to issues.
I DID PM him to take it down, he did not, I called him a boob on the forum.
got banned, but I was and still am right .

I am not always right, ask my wife or ex wife.
but even they will admit I am rarely wrong.

my deal is if your paying anybody to do a job that payee should do the absolute best job they can or do not do it at all.
and sometimes the best is simply not good enough.

          boating is spensive.
boating for the most part is a play toy.
if a toy gets to spensive it gets neglected or sold.

sometimes if the customer cannot afford new or repaired like new I can work with them.

if they don't mind burning a tad more oil and running on borrowed time,,, sometimes I can put it back together in less than optimal shape but they are back on the water.

but if I engineer a job it will usually last.

          pitted bearings and races???
depends on how bad the pitting is and will it stop a roller from rolling or stick the rollers and make it a slider.
          sliders wont live long.

          cyl walls???
if the are to egg shaped or pitted it simply burns oil.

will live if not pushed but it will burn oil,, check the oil more often.

but some of the internet stuff simply makes me go "REALLY".

the rust pits just hold more oil to help lubricate, right

              nope it does not.
pits make it burn more oil.
              take last winter.
one of my crabbers had a riser freeze and allowed water in a cyl.
stuck the motor and stuck a valve.
I removed the head, got the motor unstuck.
played with the valve and got it free, lapped that valve.
used my knife to knock off some of the rust pits on the cyl wall and hit it lightly with some 320 emery.

poor guy had just dropped 4 grand on gear when he found the stuck motor.

after my PATCH the motor ran fine all summer and fall, this winter he winterized it properly, and now burns about 1 qt per week as opposed to about a qt a month.

so it is still a patch,he is still on borrowed time but it still runs well.
